What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of focused consciousness like other similar states that occur regularly in you and every human being. 

You Mean I’ve Already Been Hypnotized and Didn’t Know It? 


Well, sort of. 

A hypnotic trance is very similar to things you might not think of as an “altered state,” such as day dreaming, “autopilot” driving (have you ever gotten home and not remembered actually driving there?), extremely focused absorption (been so preoccupied with a task that you didn’t hear someone calling your name?), deep prayer or meditation.   All of us access these states regularly but not consciously or intentionally – we just slip into them while in class, reading, watching a movie or being engrossed in our favorite hobby (or avoiding our chores).  

In therapeutic hypnosis, you work together with us to intentionally create this trance-like state of mind via hypnotic induction so you can access your inner knowledge and wisdom to solve issues and enhance your life and wellbeing.

Come on man....   You already know the answer to this question, and we want to give it to you straight because it's our goal to help you as quickly and efficiently as possible. 

You have to be 1) willing to examine your subconscious and then 2) “do the work” (see next FAQ).

Before making an appointment, make sure you're ready to bring an open mind and real motivation to seek change and improve your life.   Hypnosis is not a magic elixir that automatically fixes every ailment and issue in your life.  “It” doesn’t work – YOU do the work, using the ancient art of tapping into your own wisdom.  We simply act as a witness to hold the space for you to do this and use our training and experience to guide you safely and effectively into trance and out, and during hypnosis help you review and navigate various aspects of your current life and memories of this life or past lives.

How does Hypnotherapy work and What is “the Work?”

Your subconscious mind is your secret, hidden superpower.  If you imagine an iceberg, your conscious mind would be the visible tip, and your subconscious mind would be the vast, powerful berg hidden below the surface that is quietly and safely floating along and supporting the visible tip.   Your subconscious mind is the repository of all your memories, the seat of your emotions, home to your creative force and communicates in imagery.

Now, you can allow your powerful subconscious mind to fill up with ideas, beliefs and memories that are empowering and full of hope and potential, or you can allow it to remain cluttered up with untrue limiting thoughts and beliefs that you adopted earlier on (and typically these unfortunate beliefs come from authority figures, such as parents, older siblings teachers, neighbors).  These ideas may have made sense or served you well at the time, but they likely are holding you back today.   Are you ready to let go of them?  That’s “the work.”

Can Anyone be Hypnotized?

Yes.  Because hypnosis is a natural state available to all human beings.  However, just as it is possible to resist going to sleep, it is also possible to resist hypnosis.  If you really want to come in and dare to be hypnotized and insist you can’t, we can’t make you go into trance.  But, why would you want to?  There are innumerable benefits available to you.   It is true that some people are more naturally responsive than others.  However, even if one is not initially or quickly responsive to hypnosis, you can practice (even on your own) and learn to relax. 

What Does It Feel Like to be Hypnotized?

Some people may expect something spectacular.   In actual fact, hypnosis is simply a very relaxed state – physically and mentally.  Physically , you are comfortable and resting – not asleep but fully conscious. Some people report experiencing a sensation of new energy flowing, gentle tingling, some weightlessness in hands and feet, eyes fluttering, eyes moistening, slowed breathing, enhance d senses (imagery, smell, hearing, taste, touch).  Mostly, you will experience deep rest and come out feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Mentally, you are not unconscious or asleep – your mind is active, you perceive all stimuli and are able to hear, to remember and to communicate.  Your mind is very focused, allowing you to access inner knowledge and wisdom about yourself, about others, about situations in your life and discover answers to problems and challenges.

Can Someone Get “Stuck” in Hypnosis?

No.  It is an altered state of consmciousness (not unconsciousness), and you remain in full control at all times of what is said and what happens, including the ability to come out of hypnosis – and to go back in.

What Can I Expect during My First Session?

A good portion of the first session is educational.  You will understand how we will work together and how your subconscious mind operates and responds to positive suggestions and imagery.  It has been demonstrated that when people know more about hypnosis, they tend to do better in the hypnotherapy process because they allow it to happen.

In a typical session of solution-focused hypnotherapy we follow a series of steps to put you on the path to wellbeing.


First, you set the goals of treatment and decide what you would like to achieve.
We then discuss how the brain works and explain why you feel the way you do.
Next, we help you set achievable goals for the coming week.
Then we work with trance to put the brain into solution-focused mode which will help you achieve those goals.

All this takes place in a restful, comfortable setting in a private office.  Before we begin, we will answer all of your questions about hypnosis and the process and generally discuss the recommended approach and its imagery.  We will then guide you into a state of hypnotic relaxatio  where you will begin the process that will help you to rapidly achieve your desired results.  After you emerge from hypnosis, you will spend some time talking about your experience.


What about Other Sessions?


In sessions you will safely explore aspects of your subconscious mind, beginning with a deep, relaxed trance state and followed by proven techniques (including some of the following:  positive affirmations, vivid imagery, regression, inner wisdom integration, emotional release, belief examination, pain management, accelerated healing and trauma reversal).   These techniques can create deep mental and physical relaxation, reduce stress, refocus motivation on achieving goals achieve or changing habits, reclaim your personal power and gain a deeper appreciate of the power of your mind to heal yourself.  You can re-connect, balance and integrate your mental, physical and spiritual aspects.  Yes, hypnosis can do all this.

How Long is a Typical Session?  And How Many Sessions will it Take?

Hypnotherapy sessions are generally 1 to 1 ½ hours, depending upon what we are working on.  Expect your first session to take 1 ½-2 hours.  Fees are charged per session regardless of time.  Hypnosis is designed to be a direct connection to your powerful subconscious mind, and so some issues may be addressed in a session or two.  Other issues, and especially ones that are more longstanding or touch on more deeply held emotions or beliefs, may take more sessions to really get to the core and address or release what we discover together.  On issues like those, we would expect to work with you for around 3-6 sessions.  For this reason, we offer conveniently priced 3-session and 6-session packages


Hypnotherapy, in general, tends to be a more direct and more efficient method of addressing many issues.  Most issues can be addressed in less than 10 sessions.  Some may be addressed in one.  There is no way to know in advance what healing and advancement may occur or be possible as it is up to your own subconscious mind.   We cannot guarantee particular results or timing, but we do promise to work as efficiently and effectively as we are able in any given client situation.

How Often are Sessions?

It is recommended that sessions be spaced approximately a week apart.  You will leave each session with accelerators that reinforce the work we’ve done and/or that will open your mind up to the possibilities you’d like to create.  It's best to schedule your next session as you leave so you stay dedicated to achieving your goal.  You may schedule sessions directly while in the office or call us.  (We’re working on convenient online scheduling software that we expect to have up soon.)

How does Hypnotherapy Work with more Traditional Medical Treatments?

People often choose to combine hypnotherapy as an adjunct to their traditional medical services.  If you are working with another medical professional, please let us know on our in-take form, and we will coordinate with your practitioner with your permission.  The work of hypnotherapy is a deeply relaxing and empowering process which can greatly reduce stress (on your mind and body) and enhance your innate capacity for self-healing.  Together, through the relaxing and empowering process of hypnotherapy, we can access your ability to create the changes that are needed to support a healthy and balanced life.
